Ap. Wolfgang, JOB STRESS, COWORKER SOCIAL SUPPORT, AND CAREER COMMITMENT - A COMPARISON OF FEMALE AND MALE PHARMACISTS, Journal of social behavior and personality, 10(6), 1995, pp. 149-160
The present study investigated the potential influence of coworker soc
ial support and job stress on male and female pharmacists' career comm
itment. A mail questionnaire was used to collect data from 218 female
and 378 male actively practicing pharmacists randomly selected from ac
ross the nation. Career commitment of male and female pharmacists did
not differ significantly and coworker social support was positively re
lated to career commitment for both groups. Only one stress factor, Pr
ofessional Recognition, exhibited a significant association with caree
r commitment for women in the sample, but all four stress factors were
significantly related to males' level of career commitment. Three str
ess factors, Professional Recognition, Job Conflicts, and Professional
Uncertainty, were negatively related to males' career commitment. Pat
ient Care Responsibilities stress was positively related to career com
mitment.
