healthy seven year old Warmblood mare showed a persistent hyperbilirub
inemia over several years. This hyperbilirubinemia was mainly caused b
y unconjugated bilirubin. There were no indications for a hemolytic di
sorder or an acquired hepatic disease. The disorder in this horse seem
s to be similar to an inherited human disorder, where a deficient gluc
uronidation of bilirubin is caused by a deficiency of the enzyme bilir
ubin-uridine diphosphatase glucuronyl transferase in the liver cells.
