Abstract
This article is an introduction to the history of sugarcane in India, believed by some to be the country of its origin. References in early literature are mentioned and the ancient pestle and mortar methods of cane crushing are described. Later developments covering the period up to the end of the 19th century were wooden and then iron rollers, bot h horizontal and vertical.
