The electrochemical fluorination (ECF) of N,N-dimethyltrifluoromethane
sulphonamide and N,N-dimethylnonafluorbutanesulphonamide gives the cor
responding perfluorinated N,N-bis(trifluoromethyl) perfluoroalkanesulp
honamides in good yield. In contrast, the ECF of N,N-dimethylmethanesu
lphonamide results in decomposition of the starting material. The natu
re of the partially fluorinated by-products serves to clarify the mech
anism of ECF, which strongly depends on the formation of nickel fluori
des of higher oxidation number on the anodic surface.
