The earliest information education in Nigeria was in the form of in-se
rvice training that was conducted in individual libraries. The Institu
te of Librarianship was established at the University College, Ibadan,
in 1959 as the basic professional preparation for graduates of other
disciplines. Since then other library schools offering undergraduate p
rograms have opened in all parts of the country. Examination of the ad
mission requirements to three- and four-year BLS degree programs of th
e library schools reveals that there is emphasis on knowledge of acade
mic subjects but not of foreign languages.
