Abstract
alpha[PW11NbO40](4-) (2) was obtained by addition of an NbO3+ group, r esulting from the controlled hydrolysis of NbCl5, on the monovacant Ke ggin heteropolyanion alpha-[PW11O39](7-). The resultant saturated comp ound 2 was reacted with variable amounts of paramethoxyphenylthionopho sphine sulfide (R(2)P(2)S(4)) to give the first Keggin compound alpha- [PW11NbSO39](4-) (3) with sulfide replacing oxide. The O/S substitutio n in the Keggin structure was clearly evidenced by IR and Raman studie s, together with P-31 NMR and voltammetric data.
