Abstract
The Asian developing countries are classified with respect to their so cio-economic situation and energy resource endowment. Energy utilizati on levels for both commercial and biomass-based fuels are indicated in relation to resource availability. Renewable energy technologies and the potential in the region are briefly reviewed, as well as the techn ological potential and R&D activities for energy development. The pape r concludes with a discussion of research imperatives for energy secto r planning.
