Seventy-four adolescents with hearing impairment, enrolled in public a
nd residential schools, completed self-evaluations of their social ski
lls. The self-ratings were compared according to educational setting a
nd mode of communication. Public school students rated their social sk
ills higher than did residential students. The finding are discussed r
elative to previous studies, influential variables, and implications f
or social development and intervention among youth with hearing impair
ment.
