Abstract
We quantize two-dimensional anomalous chiral gauge theories by followi ng the Batalin-Fradkin prescription for converting second-class system s to first-class ones. Because of the chiral anomaly, the classical Po isson brackets of the Batalin-Fradkin scheme must be replaced by anoma lous Poisson brackets in the fermionic formulation. With respect to th ese brackets the first-class constraints, the BRST charge, and the uni tarizing Hamiltonian are explicitly constructed. The partition functio n is computed for different gauge choices. The unitary gauge and the c onventional Faddeev-Popov-like gauges are analyzed in detail. In the l atter gauges we obtain generalized Wess-Zumino-type actions.
