Cables with sheaths providing protection from chemicals and moisture h
ave gained in popularity among many industrial and utility users in No
rth America and Europe. These sheaths are used to protect low-, medium
-, and high-voltage power cables as well as fiber-optic and instrument
ation cables. This paper presents an overview of the theory, design, t
esting, and field experience for each type cable as it pertains to che
mical and moisture protection. Documentation is provided covering unde
rground installations of chemical-moisture barrier cable in a large pe
trochemical manufacturing facility located on the Texas Gulf Coast.
