Abstract
This paper presents characterizations of optimum multiuser detection i n intensity-modulation direct-detection CDMA channels based on asympto tic analysis of simple bounds on optimum performance. Technical diffic ulties in applying large deviation techniques to the evaluation of asy mptotic multiuser efficiencies are rigorously addressed. These same di fficulties also lead to derivation of conditions under which the linea r multiuser detection achieves known-interference (hence, optimum) per formance. Asymptotic analysis of the conventional correlation receiver , including derivation of the optimal decision threshold for on-off si gnaling formats, is also presented.
