The objectives of these tests were to understand the behavior of high-
rise frame structures, with wall columns (HFW system) during an earthq
uake, and to validate an analytical model with the test results. Two o
ne-seventh-scale, 11-story HFW models were tested an a shaking table.
One model was excited in the longitudinal direction only, and the othe
r model was excited simultaneously in both the longitudinal and transv
erse directions. These tests indicate that under one-way excitation, t
he test model failed in flexure at the girders, and under two-way exci
tation, the test model failed in flexure at the walls and girders. Cal
culated values of maximum shear strength from the analytical model wer
e close to the test values in the longitudinal direction when either o
ne-half or the full width of the transverse bay length was assumed as
the effective flange width.
