The existence of Jute fibre in its conventional use is challenged by s
ynthetic fibre and its export has been gradually decreased. Therefore,
it is necessary to find some new uses for Jute fibre and its wastes.
It has been found through research investigation at the Jute Technolog
ical Research Laboratory (JTRL), Calcutta, India that Jute fibre in th
e form of Jute caddies, root cuttings, Jute feshwa, thread wastes, etc
. having high percentage of cellulose and long fibre are quite suitabl
e as non-wood fibrous material for manufacture of different grades of
paper, e.g. wrapping paper, sack paper, paper board, etc. from un-blea
ched pulp and writing/printing paper, various speciality papers, etc.
from the bleached pulp. In this paper, discussion has been made to uti
lise Jute fibre in different forms for making pulp, paper and board, o
ther than in conventional uses.
