The effect of electrolysis conditions on the reduction of alpha,alpha-
dichloropropionic acid is studied. Lead, copper, and compact pyrograph
ite are shown to be the most applicable cathodic materials for its con
version to monochloropropionic acid. The conditions of the most select
ive and efficient process are determined for all three electrodes. The
contribution of a chemical reaction to the reduction process is deter
mined from a more detailed study of the dechlorination on lead. Data o
btained confirm indirectly the earlier assumption on the formation of
an intermediate organometallic compound during electrolysis..
