Dg. Mita et al., IMMOBILIZED-ENZYME ACTIVITY UNDER ISOTHERMAL AND NONISOTHERMAL CONDITIONS - STUDIES ON BETA-GALACTOSIDASE AS A MODEL ENZYME, Biotechnology and applied biochemistry, 22, 1995, pp. 281-294
The behaviour of catalytic reactions was studied when an enzyme is imm
obilized to a membrane interposed between two solutions of identical s
ubstrate concentration, kept at different temperatures. beta-Galactosi
dase was studied as a model enzyme. In the presence of a temperature g
radient the apparent enzyme activity is higher than in comparable isot
hermal conditions. The activity increase is proportional to the applie
d transmembrane temperature difference. Two possible explanations are
proposed for this behaviour. Various biotechnological applications are
suggested.
