Abstract
This paper seeks to clarify the concept of sustainable development and examine the ways in which it is being or might be pursued. There will be many routes to sustainable development which will need coordinatio n. The concept has great value, but implementation has so far been dis appointing. If it is to be achieved, a substantial portion of the worl d's population will have to change their attitude and behaviour.
