The polarizing interference microscope is used with a fibre manipulati
on device to study, dynamically, the variation of refractive indices a
nd birefringence of PE fibres with the draw ratio. The resulting data
were used to calculate Poisson's ratio over all strain ranges. In addi
tion, the strain optical coefficient and some other parameters and con
stants were calculated. Also, an empirical formula is applied to demon
strate the variation of the cross-sectional area of PE fibres with dra
w ratio and the constants of this formula are determined. Microinterfr
ograms are given for illustration.
