After giving a short sketch of the status of the field we treat two mo
dels of runaway in some detail. One is a Fokker-Planck equation, the o
ther a kinetic equation with compact kernel. Both are 1-d models; both
deal with the marginal case of (1/v) relaxation of diffusion coeffici
ent or reaction-rate. We also give a description - in 1-d - of the Gau
ssian shape of the runaway pulse following an initial burst.
