Three teichoic acids have been isolated from Bacillus licheniformis. T
heir structures were found to be 1,3 poly(glycerolphosphate), -->3)-al
pha-D-Gal p-(1-->1)-L-glycerol-(3 --> phosphate, and --> 3)-[beta-D-Gl
c p-(1-->2)]-alpha-D-Gal p-(1-->1)-L-glycerol-(3 --> phosphate. Withou
t separating the individual teichoic acids, and despite their high mol
ecular weight, these polysaccharides could be identified by modern NMR
techniques alone.
