Abstract
In this paper we first introduce complex refractive indices to describ e the optical losses in the buffer layer of optical waveguides obtaine d by ion implantation. It is shown that the color-center absorption in the buffer layer can change significantly the mode-spacing function. We carried out a detailed analysis of the influence of the imaginary c omponent of the buffer layer refractive index on the propagation chara cteristics.
