In the mercury-sensitized photolysis of Me(3)SiH, it was found that th
e mercury concentration does not remain constant during photolysis, an
d mercury forms an unidentified compound. The compound decomposes to e
lemental mercury by radical attack and in the dark by a surface-cataly
sed reaction. Experiments suggest that mercury atoms in the ground sta
te are involved in compound formation.
