We present the design of the first level muon trigger in the central t
oroid of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A tr
igger is foreseen based on fast, finely segmented gaseous detectors, R
esistive Plate Chambers (RPC), to unambiguously identify the interacti
on bunch crossing. We describe the detectors and the logic scheme of t
he trigger.
