Abstract
The reaction of nitrites of Na+, Bu(4)(n)N(+) and Ni2+ with liquid din itrogen tetraoxide and the factors affecting the rate and extent of th e reaction have been studied. Oxidation occurs to the corresponding ni trate in a manner consistent only with the heterolytic dissociation of N2O4 into NO+ and NO3-. The synthesis of anhydrous Ni(NO2)(2) is desc ribed in detail.
