In order to improve the adhesion of polypropylene (PP) films towards s
ome other polar polymeric films, PP films are grafted with acrylic aci
d after two type of activation pretreatments: gamma-rays and argon pla
sma. The purpose of our work is to compare their efficiency to activat
e the surface, and the structure of the grafted layers in order to und
erstand the resulting adhesion properties of the two kind of modified
PP. It was shown that in spite of a peroxide concentration 100 times l
ower than after gamma-irradiation and a percentage of grafting below 1
% in weight, the argon plasma treated films leads to a more homogeneou
s grafted layer with higher properties of adhesion than a gamma-preirr
adiated film.
