Jc. Pivin et al., EFFECTS OF IONIZATIONS AND DISPLACEMENTS ON THE HARDNESS AND OPTICAL-ABSORPTION OF SOME ION-IRRADIATED POLYMERS, Nuclear instruments & methods in physics research. Section B, Beam interactions with materials and atoms, 105(1-4), 1995, pp. 192-196
The modifications of optical absorption spectra and of hardness induce
d by irradiations with various ion species in three polymers have been
determined quantitatively by means of spectroscopic ellipsometry and
of nanoindentation tests. Their analysis in terms of amounts of energy
deposited respectively in nuclear collisions and in electronic excita
tions indicates that the latter have a predominant effect on both prop
erties. The efficiency of ionizations depends on the ability of radica
ls formed under each ion impact to interact.
