Abstract
A simple, robust and efficient image segmentation algorithm for classi fying brain tissues from dual echo Magnetic Resonance (MR) images is p resented. The algorithm consists of a sequence of adaptive histogram a nalysis, morphological operations and knowledge based rules to accurat ely classify various regions such as the brain matter and the cerebros pinal fluid, and detect if there are any abnormal regions. It can be c ompletely automated and has been tested on over hundred images from se veral patient studies. Experimental results are provided.
