We demonstrate that laser-light scattering (LLS) off glacial (pre-Holo
cene) polar ice can be used to measure variations in dust concentratio
n along sections of bubble-free ice core. We have used this technique
with considerable success on the GISP2 ice core that was retrieved fro
m central Greenland down to bedrock. The technique is fast, non-destru
ctive and has a very high resolution (1 mm or less).
