Abstract
The authors report 1.3 mu m DFB lasers operating in the -40 - 85 degre es C temperature range without a thermo-electric cooler. At 85 degrees C the threshold current is 35mA and quantum efficiency is as high as 0.21mW/mA. In a 2.5Gbit/s system, measurements with a highly dispersiv e fibre indicate a transmission penalty below 0.3dB up to 75 degrees C .
