Abstract
Laboratory experiments of graupel charging during ice particle collisi ons reveal a charge sign dependence on temperature and cloud condition s. Several experiments and theories are reviewed and it is concluded t hat detailed information is needed on the surface conditions of graupe l pellets in order to identify the charge transfer processes that oper ate in thunderstorms.
