The history of the psychoanalytic therapy shows a tendency towards the
extention of the duration of the treatment. Since the psychoanalytic
therapy in Germany was included into the public health care system, mo
difications were made especially by limitation of the duration. The au
thor regards these modifications mirrowing the recent ''Zeitgeist'', a
spirit which centers on what is practicable, measurable and controlab
le. There was little attention on the impact of the limitation of time
on the psychoanalytic process. The author suggests to conceptualize t
he psychoanalytic therapy under the condition of the limitation of the
duration into a bifocal model, with the time limitation as the struct
ural focus beside the dynamic focus of the transference process.
