Current discussions on the goals of further education in psychoanalysi
s and the appropriate frequency and duration of psychoanalytic treatme
nt are influenced by professional politics and material interests. How
ever, these discussions should also be oriented to changing perception
s of the professional competence of the psychoanalyst. The author's pe
rsonal review shows how these perceptions change in a very short perio
d of time. The most important reference point for a change in psychoan
alytic methods is clinical experience with patients.
