The directionally weighted steric substituent constant Omega(jk) was i
ntroduced to evaluate the anisotropic steric hindrance effect to the r
eaction centre. The correlation of the rates with a series of directio
nally weighted Omega(jk) is useful for characterizing the feature of s
teric effect. The difference between the hydrolyses of carboxylic este
rs and carboxamides was shown by this method.
