Sexual dysfunction can be a distressing side effect of renal failure.
A variety of sexual problems are experienced by both men and women of
all ages, including impotence, reduced libido, gynecomastia, anovulati
on, and infertility. The causes of these problems can be both physiolo
gical and psychological, and careful assessment is required to determi
ne the nature of the problem in order to prescribe the most effective
treatment. Sexual function is an integral part of the rehabilitation p
rocess, and in order for the patient to achieve the optimal level of w
ell-being medical and nursing staff should be aware of the patient's a
nxieties and should use empathic skills to offer practical help and co
unseling.
