Vg. Alpatov et al., CHECK OF THE PARADOXICAL RESULTS OF EXPERIMENTS ON RESONANCE SELF-ABSORPTION OF GAMMA-QUANTA OF AG-109 IN SILVER CRYSTALS, Measurement techniques, 38(3), 1995, pp. 341-346
The temperature dependence of the intensity of gamma-quanta of Ag-109
with an energy of 88 keV, emitted in the horizontal and vertical direc
tions from a single-crystal plate of silver containing Cd-109, the rad
ioactive decay of which produces excited nuclei of Ag-109, is investig
ated The gamma radiation of this specimen and a control gamma-source o
f Co-57 were recorded by two Ge(Li)-detectors. When the specimen is co
oled from 77 K to similar to 12 K there is a relative drop in the inte
nsity of gamma-quanta of Ag-109 emitted in the horizontal direction by
0.00064 +/- 0.00044. For the vertical direction the analogous quantit
y turned our to be of opposite sign and equal to -0.00047 +/- 0.00051.
These preliminary data would appear to favor existing suggestions of
a slight broadening of the gamma-resonance of the Ag-109 nuclei in sil
ver single crystals. However, in further experiments, in which the acc
uracy is increased considerably, it will have to be established whethe
r the difference in these quantities is due to some apparatus effects.
