Abstract
Experimental data and analysis are described which are derived from th e study of plasma detachment in the JET Mark I divertor. The paper cov ers the comparison of carbon and beryllium targets in this regime, the effect of geometry, the need for extrinsic impurities for detachment at high power and the influence of these impurities on plasma purity a nd confinement.
