Abstract
Neutral beam systems for the next generation of magnetic fusion device s will be based on negative ions. Developments are progressing steadil y, and large negative ion-based systems are under preparation for JT60 -U and LHD, and are being considered for ITER An overview of the physi cs of the production, acceleration and neutralization of large negativ e ion beams is given. The present state of the art in R&D is also surv eyed.
