Abstract
In the present paper, the parametric decay instability of an extraordi nary electromagnetic wave (X-wave) into an electron Bernstein wave (EB W) and an electrostatic whistler wave (W-wave) has been studied. Expre ssions are derived for homogeneous threshold, growth rate, and convect ive threshold for this instability. The relevance of the present param etric process has been pointed out to explain the generation of whistl er mode radiations in the SL-2 experiment, ionospheric modification ex periment, in the polar cusp region of the magnetosphere, as well as du ring intense electron cyclotron resonance heating in the MTX tokamak.
