Abstract
We investigate the origin of the radial orbit instability, and we show , both analytically and numerically, that its origin lies in the trans formation of loop orbits into box orbits. We also show that, in order to obtain a complete description of the radial orbit instability, it i s necessary to include the effect of chaotic motion.
