QUANTITATION OF CELL CHANGES IN THE RAT MEDIAL TERMINAL NUCLEUS AFTERUNILATERAL EYE ENUCLEATION

By using autoradiography, image analysis and quantitation, we have obt ained quantitative data to show the extent of differences in terminal expansion of the ipsilateral retinal inputs to the medial terminal nuc leus (MTN) in the adult rat with one eye enucleated at birth. Statisti cal analysis showed that the volume of the ipsilateral retinal termina tion to MTN of one-eye-enucleated rats had increased significantly, an d the neuronal number in the contralateral MTN had decreased substanti ally when compared to those of the normal rat.
