Abstract
Relations between the degree of polarization of the incident beam and that of the outgoing beam are discussed for a number of optical device s and for scattering by particles and surfaces. Rigorous upper and low er bounds for the degree of polarization of the outgoing beam are give n for cases in which the degree of polarization of the incident beam i s known.
