C. Pascu et al., INHIBITION OF EXTRACELLULAR-MATRIX AND SERUM-PROTEIN BINDING TO STAPHYLOCOCCUS-AUREUS BY HEPARIN AND VARIOUS POLYSULFATED AGENTS, Medical microbiology letters, 4(8), 1995, pp. 397-405
Cells of Staphylococcus aureus strain Cowan 1 express high binding of
lactoferrin, vitronectin, thrombospondin and fibronectin. Binding of t
hese extracellular matrix and serum proteins was inhibited by heparin
and heparin-like molecules (pentosan polysulphate, fucoidan), sulphate
d polyanions (suramin) and by sulphated dyes (Evans blue, Trypan blue
and Congo red) but not by nonsulphated and carboxylated compounds.
