Transmission electron microscopic studies of the interaction of Aeromo
nas hydrophila strain A6 (A6) with human erythrocytes showed membrane-
to-membrane contact, consistent with outer membrane (OM)-based adhesio
n in A6. The expression of a 43 kDa OM protein was enhanced when cells
were cultured in the presence of 0.42% maltose, indicating this prote
in is a maltoporin. New OM proteins were induced when A6 was cultured
in media supplemented with glucose.
