A recent study found that hyperhomocysteinemia is associated with an i
ncreased risk for extracranial carotid artery stenosis, while another
study demonstrated that hyperhomocysteinemia is a common risk factor f
or recurrent venous thrombosis. It seems as if an elevated circulating
homocysteine is atherogenic as well as thrombogenic, possibly indicat
ing extensive involvement of homocysteine in the pathogenesis of coron
ary heart disease.
