Based on research exploring cultural processes in Mexico City, this ar
ticle compares styles of study in sociology, anthropology, and communi
cations studies. How can these three perspectives be combined to expla
in the complexity of a megacity as well as the multiplicity of groups
and sectors into which it is fragmented? This article also analyzes th
e role of local traditions in the globalization of urban life, and the
reformulation of the anthropological discourse that is necessary in o
rder to speak of the Other in cities torn by multiculturalism. Relatin
g to this point, some differences between postmodern urban thought in
the U.S.-European metropolis and in Latin America are suggested.
