Mi. Redleaf et al., MEDULLARY CARCINOMA OF THE THYROID METASTATIC TO THE TEMPORAL BONE, Journal of Laryngology and Otology, 109(12), 1995, pp. 1200-1203
We report a case of proven thyroid medullary carcinoma, metastatic to
the temporal bone. Review of the otolaryngology literature demonstrate
s that this is the first such report. The patient presented with sympt
oms, physical examination, and imaging studies suggestive of a glomus
jugulare tumour. The pre-operative diagnosis of metastatic thyroid med
ullary carcinoma, however; was made, based on a history of medullary c
arcinoma of the thyroid with previous metastases as well as an elevati
on in calcitonin levels. Histological examination of the surgical spec
imen cofirmed the diagnosis.
