Positron emission tomography (PET) is a functional imaging technique w
hich allows detection of biochemical and pharmacological dysfunction o
f the nigrostriatal dopaminergic system and provides the opportunity t
o investigate living patients with PD. This paper reviews the contribu
tion of PET studies to the understanding of neurochemical changes unde
rlying Parkinson's disease.
