Abstract
In the present paper, are reported the avaible data dealing with the m echanisms involved in the setting up of the insect olfactory system du ring the metamorphosis. Mainly based on results gained with the honeyb ee (Apis mellifera), and discussed in the light of data related to oth er holometabolous insects, it is shown that both programmed and non pr ogrammed factors are involved in the development of the adult olfactor y system.
