Abstract
Meat inspection records were analysed in, order to determine the cause s of condemnation in goats between 1990-93. A total of 181,170 goats w ere slaughtered during this period. The major causes of liver condemna tion were Stilesia hepatica (35.40 parts per thousand), abscesses (11. 81 parts per thousand), Cysticercus tenuicollis (10.69 parts per thous and) and cloudy swelling (5.21 parts per thousand). Minor causes were fascioliasis, calcified cysts, jaundice and hapatitis. Major causes of lung condemnation were pneumonia (21.75 parts per thousand), congesti on (14.70 parts per thousand), abscesses (7.01 parts per thousand) and anthracosis (1.71 parts per thousand). Pimply gut and enteritis were respectively responsible for 3.16% and 0.24 parts per thousand condemn ed intestines. Nephritis and abscesses were the only recorded causes o f kidney and head condemnation respectively. Gaseous lymphadenitis and extensive bruising were respectively responsible for 0.73 parts per t housand and 0.31 parts per thousand condemned carcasses. The financial losses due to organ and carcass condemnation were US $ 16980.
