Further measurements on single crystals of Cs2CoCl3 and Cs3CoCl5 to en
large the knowledge of the electronic structure of the CoCl42- ion are
presented. In the visible region, the spectra show better definition
of the spin-forbidden band distribution arising from the two Ti quarte
t terms F-4 and P-4. Besides, measurements with X-ray photoelectron sp
ectroscopy (XPS) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) allow on
e to (a) trace (in XPS) the density-of-states (DOS) of the valence orb
itals and measure the first interband transitions as satellites near t
he main Co2p(3/2) peak; and (b) identify other interband transitions a
nd several plasmons in EELS.
