Abstract
The optical/UV spectra of C-70 provide direct evidence for the couplin g of electronic motion to distortions of the fullerene surface. The di fference between the spectrum obtained when the electric field of the photon is parallel to the long axis of the molecule and when it is per pendicular to it, appears to depend sensitively on the effective quadr upole distortion of the fullerene's mean field.
